fail. :D
Woke up this morning to the frightening feeling that
a) I haven't posted anything in quite awhile
b) I haven't yet given prompts to people who did December giftfics
c) I have quite literally accomplished nothing

I think I say this with every post, but if I owe you something, LET ME KNOW. My memory is horrid.

Secondly, I almost never do memes, but that 2011 one looked like fun. That is, it looked like fun until I started doing it. xD Then it took me forever to finish and I was quite frustrated with trying to come up with answers. But I prevailed, if anyone's curious.

1. What did you do in 2011 that you'd never done before?

- Apply for graduate school
- Live abroad
- Write for a North American fandom xD
- Experience a significant natural disaster

2. Did you keep your New Year's resolutions?

I didn't actually make any! How sad am I?

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?

I... don't think so...

4. Did anyone close to you get married?

Nope, but several of my friends got engaged (and henceforth reminded me of what a loser I am).

5. Did anyone close to you die?

6. What countries did you visit?

Japan, Taiwan, Korea, the United States, Mexico. :D

7. What would you like to have in 2012 that you lacked in 2011?

Maybe an actual social life...? (Nahh.)

8. What dates from 2011 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?

- Friday, March 11: The 2011 Tohoku Earthquake
- Saturday, April 9: Headed home after almost a year abroad!
- Saturday, April 23: Took (and passed!) my Grade 9 RCM examination for violin, three days after my birthday. :D
- Tuesday, December 20: Finally fleshed out my [redact.] Statement of Intent. xD

9. What were your biggest achievements of the year?

- Not flaking out on the LSAT
- Not freaking out following the earthquake
- Successfully completing a term that involved a 6-hour spare three days a week without going mad xD

10. What was your biggest failure?

(Just one?)

- Not applying for the SSHRC on time
- Procrastinating endlessly
- Giving up on a significant number of challenges to which I'd originally been inordinately dedicated

11. Did you suffer illness or injury?

Well. Hit by a car in May, but that doesn't really count. xD

12. What was the best thing you bought?

My bike! :D I'd say my skis, but since they haven't arrived yet, I don't think they count, either. Haha.

13. Whose behaviour merited celebration?

- My parents, who reacted to everything going on in Japan with a steadfastness I never would have been able to achieve
- A good friend of mine, who put up six complete strangers in her (one-bedroom) flat for over two weeks
- My brother, who admitted to having issues beyond his control

14. Whose behaviour appalled you?

- My brother, who's improving... xD
- Myself, as I did some absolutely moronic things this year, haha~

15. Where did most of your money go?

TUITION. (Surprise!)

16. What did you get really, really, really excited about?

- Teaching private lessons in English
- Season Four of TM
- The December pre-screening of Sherlock 02x01 at the BFI in London, even though I wasn't there xD
- Ringing in the New Year by actually watching the aforementioned 02x01
- Getting my bike back from the repair shop
- Getting my laptop back with all data intact

17. What song will always remind you of 2011?

Tegami - Angela Aki

18. Compared to this time last year, are you:
i. happier or sadder?
Happier. Much. :D
ii. thinner or fatter? Earlier, fatter. Currently, thinner. :D
iii. richer or poorer? POORER. OMG, POORER.

19. What do you wish you'd done more of?

- Meeting people
- Writing
- Volunteering
- Being assertive xD

20. What do you wish you'd done less of?

- Being a pushover
- Caving xD
- Being passive-aggressive
- Procrastinating
- Spending money on stupid things

21. How did you spend Christmas?

As usual, my brother and I pulled the DRAMATIC AND HECTIC CHRISTMAS ROADTRIP between my mom's, my dad's, and my grandparents' places, gorging ourselves on turkey and shortbread, before collapsing in an exhausted heap and sleeping for four days straight.

22. How will you be spending New Year's?

I already spent it. xD But I spent it a) counting down the hours before Sherlock, b) Skyping friends in Vancouver and abroad, and c) sitting by myself. (THAT'S NOT DEPRESSING AT ALL.)

23. Did you fall in love in 2011?

Does Benedict Cumberbatch count? ... (If not, no.)

24. How many one-night stands?

25. What was your favourite TV program?

For most of 2011, it was TM (as I was abroad most of the time and I didn't have a TV), but then it swung drastically into BBC's Sherlock over the course of about two hours in November...? December? October?

26. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?

Definitely not; I just don't hate people.

27. What was the best book you read?

1Q84 - Murakami Haruki

But I also didn't read much this year in English, and most of what I read in Japanese couldn't qualify as literature. xD

28. What was your greatest musical discovery?

- Listening to the song I mentioned above (Tegami) in Japan nearly every day, and coming home to Canada to realize I could play it by ear on the piano; that made it even more deeply meaningful to me
- The Huron Carol as performed by the Canadian Tenors; it sends shivers down my spine
- What the Water Gave Me, by Florence + the Machine; again, shivers

29. What did you want and get?

- A bicycle
- A summer job
- Passing grades xD

30. What did you want and not get?

- An electric violin (haha~)
- A PROMPT FROM watchyouwalk! (Kidding, KIDDING.)

NB. 30.5. What did you not want, but get?

- A character sketch of myself as defined by the signs of AS/HFA. xDD

31. What was your favourite film of this year?

I honestly can't say; I didn't watch many movies... Oh, wait. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. YES.

32. What did you do on your birthday?

... I... don't recall... I think we went out for dinner...? xD

33. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?

Less migraines. More social life. Less of that get-hit-by-a-car-and-subsequently-suffer-PTSD thing. xD

34. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2011?

- Spring/Summer: Whatever outrageous combination I felt like wearing
- Winter: Whatever got me from my flat to the ski hill and remained dry simultaneously
- Anything no one else seemed to be wearing

35. What kept you sane?

Skiing, bike-riding, learning new things, tromana, PIR, writing, all of you lovely people I've come to meet on the internet this year, Skype, Yuu-kun, my dog, and music. :D

36. Which celebrity/ public figure did you fancy the most?

Benedict Cumberbatch. :3 And also Simon Baker, ofc.

37. What political issue stirred you the most?

... *politically apathetic*

38. Who did you miss?

That's a long list.

39. Who was the best new person you met?

Yuu-kun, in Gifu city, and Kotoh-sensei, in Niigata. <33

In the not-so-irl realm, YOU GUYS ARE AMAZING AND I LOVE YOU ALL.

40. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2011.

Okay, a little anecdote: Following the earthquake, I spent nearly ten hours in a train station in Northern Japan with a useless cellphone, since all the towers had gone out, surrounded by panicking people and watching the same news clips over and over again until a taxi drove myself and two others back to our backwoods town of 800 people -- I was in the middle seat. The whole time, I couldn't stop thinking about how lucky I was.

41. Quote something that sums up your year:

"And a Happy New Year."

42. What’s your resolution for next year?

Just one? My biggest goal is to finish everything I start.

I thought about posting what essentially amounts to a reams of meta based on Sherlock 02x01, and I may do so later, but for now I'll sum it up with this: LIFE. AFFIRMING. DRAMA.

... And I'm done. Sorry for the meaningless post. xD

[edit] Wow. Just tried to type my login information into Ff.n and typed @gmail.com as @mgil.aomc instead. IS THERE ANY WAY I COULD HAVE BEEN FURTHER OFF?

Heh. Meretricious.

How does being hit by a car not count as injuring yourself? That sounds like it would.

Ugh, SSHRC apps. I did NSERC, but I assume it's much the same.

Yay Sherlock.

Also, grr to you for putting the fifteen genres, one prompt, one month idea into my head. I can't do it, for any number of reasons, not the least of which is that there are certain genres I don't write. But now I kind of want to. Your fault.
cifre: yay!cifre on January 4th, 2012 05:03 am (UTC)
Recently, I can't stop quoting Sherlock. STOP ME, PLEASE.

Well, it was really minor. xD More psychological.

Mmm, pretty much the same thing, yea. And the grants start at $17k. I'm really angry at myself about this, but oh, well; better luck next year. :P

How's it my fault!? tromana has plugged it, too. DON'T GO PINNING THIS ON ME.
Well, I'm hardly loquacious...: alice; mad cheshireh_loquacious on January 5th, 2012 05:37 am (UTC)
I know people who got NSERC a year into their Masters, so I'm sure SSHRC is similar. It si a handy thing to have though, not gonna lie. Good luck next year.

It is your fault. I am apparently not subscribed to any of the things tromana plugged it in, or at least I just didn't see it. I AM pinning this on you. Even if I'm not doing it. Maybe if you got 20 genres and picked fifteen of them, but frankly, quite apart from the fact that there's no way I should be signing up to write 15 fic in February so soon after this past December, I don't write Erotica. And I have no desire to write apoca-fic. SO.
cifre: ♥cifre on January 9th, 2012 09:55 pm (UTC)
Thank God. :D It does seem quite handy. In that kinda small way that money seems to be.

Nooohooo. That's not fair. You've probably seen the plugging elsewhere but projected your negative feelings about it onto me rather than onto a random stranger. xD (Kidding, ofc. I take the blame.)

Harhar. Well, I'm sure we'll set it up so that we don't pair you with any genres you wouldn't write -- I wouldn't write erotica, either, frankly. I barely read it, anyway, so writing it would be far beyond my scope.

The point is that it's a challenge to write genres that (a) you hate, or (b) make you uncomfortable and nervous! At least TM has significantly less crack than a lot of other fandoms; no one seems to be prompting m-preg, wing!fic, etc. (HAHA.) Though I have seen some dystopia!AU which intrigues me.

Money, yes, it is a rather handy thing to have. I mean, I don't really care about having massive amounts, but enough to live on is helpful.

Hee. Although, I believe they didn't want people to veto genres, which, yeah... is problematic. I do read erotica sometimes, but reading and writing it are two very, very different things. They just are. No way am I tackling it.

TM is generally less diverse than a lot of other fandoms, I have to say. There is some crack that I know of (and I've written some of it myself, though it's trope-poking, not m-preg or such like). Are you talking about spyglass_'s dystopia!AU? Because that thing is fabulous. At least the first chapter is.

But yeah, I don't think signing up is a good idea at this point. Too many things could go wrong, not the least of which is that I'm incapable of writing 300 word fics, so It'd be 15 1-2K fic, and I don't think that's a good idea so soon after December...
cifrecifre on January 10th, 2012 10:13 pm (UTC)
Yeah. Enough to live on would be nice... >__<; Maybe I can do a TAship, too. Not that I really want to, gaaaah.

And by "they," I assume you mean "you," as I'm one of those people who created it. xD But yes, we didn't want to veto any genres at all, but instead it looks like almost everyone is prompting erotica. COME ON. Now we're just establishing a one-genre-swap rule for people who aren't comfortable doing that.

Yea, I still scroll past some of the bits in smutty fanfiction, haha~! (I'm 23 years old, DAMMIT.) Writing it is... yeah... no.

It is! I'm not sure why, but this is one of the cleanest fandoms I've ever come across. I expected at least some genderswap? xD And yes, there is some crack (as I've written some as well; mine's also trope-poking, however).

And nah, I'm not talking about any dystopia!AU in particular; I just noticed it in someone's prompts.

True, true. I'm pretty bad at keeping things short once I get started, too. :D
Well, I'm hardly loquacious...: (tsits) Archimedes; Botherh_loquacious on January 11th, 2012 04:08 am (UTC)
If you can TA distance ed courses it's mostly marking, much less interaction with the students, and less teaching. So there is that.

Ah. I did not realize you were one of the people who created it. I think the one-genre-swap rule is a good idea, definitely. Because I'm sure there are lots of people who won't write erotica. I know several who don't write it. I'm also a bit skeptical of some of the genres, but that's a whole other thing.

The thing about genderswap is though, that they've kind of already swapped the traditional gender roles with J/L, so I suspect that's why it doesn't happen as much. IDK.

Still, I wish I didn't kind of want to do this. It would be less irritating.

It wasn't serious! xD Almost all mental. I didn't think it really counted, haha~
